My participation in the IEMI European seminary in Brussels

My participation in the IEMI European seminary in Brussels from 4th to 7th June2008 was a perfect occasion to discover the UE within its headquarters and to understand its dynamics within local and global economy.

Frankly, my first apprehension was that of almost all ‘Eurosceptics’; that we are going to hear a lot of ‘bla bla ’or ‘langue de bois’ ‘Brussels talk’ because lets face it; we all more or less see ‘Europe’ as an abstract entity, but fortunately for all of us , we saw ‘Europe’ for real and it was more interesting and more practical than that!

The first day it was a bit hot; our visit to The European Commission coincided with French and Spanish fishermen demonstrations in Brussels which gave us a live image of the dynamics within the EU economy, we attended a conference at the European commission in which we had a debriefing on the European institutions and their role within the European union, the main subject of the conference was about competitively in Europe & Lisbon Agenda process.

During our visit to The European Parliament Mr Burban, PR and Chef of Protocol at The European Parliament debriefed us about The European Union Past and present and perspectives for the future and explained to us The European Parliament rules and process.

Then we had a seminary with Dr Elisa Roller about ‘ Policy making in the European union ’which gave as a broad and detailed knowledge of how the European institutions function within the union, this was a good opportunity to be familiar with issues that are important to doing business in the European union, it gave us key tools for entrepreneurship and a better understanding of many issues.

Equally, the seminary with Dr Hoeberigs about ‘a renewed UE tourism policy towards stronger partnerships for European tourism’ gave me a detailed analysis of the sector and of its perspectives in the future.

We had a seminary with Dr Klein on ‘Financement europeen des PME-aides communautaires a la creation et au developement des enterprises partenareats publics et privés d’ entreprise’ witch gave us a broader knowledge and awareness of the different opportunities possible to create a new business and get financial advice and subventions from The European institutions and organisms present in all UE member states.

The Brussels seminary was also a good opportunity to discover Brussels as a city, and as the heart or the EU. It helped me to better understand the UE and its importance as a major actor within global economy, more importantly, this seminary helped me to better define my professional direction and objectives.

The seminary was perfectly organised, the interveners were very professional and open minders, we were perfectly welcomed in both the European Parliament and The European Commission, I want to thank both hosts and all participants who made this event a success, I definitely recommend this kind of events to all MBA students, and I hope that we are going to organise similar events in the future.
